University of Dayton
Photon-X has deep roots in
the Dayton, Ohio area dating back to the time that our CEO and founder, Blair Barbour, attended graduate school at University of Dayton.
It was at UD that some of the basic discoveries surrounding Photon-X spatial phase imaging technology were made.
Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL)
Photon-X has been conducting research at AFRL since 2003. AFRL/Photon-X programs have included phase I and II small business innovation research (SBIRs) grants and delivery of single sensor and multi-sensor based camera systems.
General areas of research have included spatial phase imaging sensor development and automated target recognition.
Wright State University
Wright State University owns a Photon-X VID3O® camera. ![]()
This system is in use for research into fused multi-sensor emotion recognition systems.
UDRI / IDCAST
Photon-X has had a presence at IDCAST and Tech Town since
2007. Offices were originally located at the old IDCAST building on 444 East Second St, but we moved to the SSE Laboratory at Tech Town in 2010.
Work with IDCAST has focused on biometric applications of spatial phase imaging.
Work with University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) has focused on signature sciences (see paragraph on SSE Lab nearby).
The Ohio State University (OSU)
Photon-X belongs to a Traycer Diagnostic Systems, Inc. lead team. This team recently won a Wright Center Grant to establish the Helios Lab within the Ohio State University ElectroScience Laboratory. Photon-X is responsible for installing a standoff facial biometric recognition system that enables researchers to investigate spatial phase imaging technology.
Signature Science Exploration (SSE)
The SSE Laboratory of UDRI
owns Photon-X VID3O® cameras. These are used to conduct research at their Tech Town facilities.
SSE cont......
SSE and Photon-X are actively conducting research in the following areas:
Demographics (number of people, ages, genders, nationality, etc.)
Attentiveness (face/eye gaze)
Kinesics (emotions, gestures, activities)
Biometrics (hard and soft)
NUI (Natural User Interface)
Interactive Digital Signage
A new Photon‑X product initiative, digital signage systems, consists of a network of digital displays, remotely controlled to provide targeted messages to groups or individuals. Digital Signage is one of the fastest growing markets in the world today, reaching a reported $4 billion in 2009.
Digital signs powered by Photon-X VID3O® cameras enable situational awareness in front of advertisements. This provides viewer metrics for demographics, attentiveness, emotional response and customer identity. Interactive control of adversitments will become a reality using standoff gesture control with natural movements.
The value of two-way touch communication is well proven in digital signage and other display applications. A negative market barrier has been the hygine issue and limited interactivity of current touch screen systems.
Photon-X VID3O enabled signage allows non-contact gestural control of the display at a distance (natural user interface).
